Groups welcome

The itinerary allows you to discover the castle of Vernazzano and the surrounding area, travelling through Tuoro and its hills.

Description

Start from the gardens of Vernazzano Basso, heading eastward. Turn left at the end of the road to reach the small cemetery of Torale. From the cemetery leave the main road by taking another left and continuing on the gravel road. Soon you will arrive at the road that takes you to the small peasant village of Torale, now private accommodation. Follow this road up to the church.

Having returned to the main gravel road, turn left to continue uphill to the last house. From here, take the path into the woods. Follow the red and white signs relating to the CAI hiking network, which you partly follow during the itinerary, until you come out into a large olive grove. Take a left and skirt the woods; after about 300 metres, turn right and carry on along the woods for another 300 metres. Here you will reach the cemetery of Vernazzano.

From the cemetery of Vernazzano, take the asphalt road downhill that leads to the church of Santa Lucia (former church of San Michele Arcangelo) and the eighteenth-century village. Once you reach the church, a relaxing break is a must to admire the stunning view that opens onto the Tuoro valley. In addition, you can catch a glimpse of the top of the “Leaning Tower”: the iconic symbol of the town and your next stop on the itinerary.

Continue downhill on the main road. As soon as you pass the curve, enter the narrow alley on the right through the houses. In a short time, you will find yourself on a beautiful forest path. After a series of hairpin bends, you will enter the narrow valley of the Rio stream; once you have crossed the wooden bridge, turn left and follow the pleasant mule track leading to the archaeological park of the castle of Vernazzano.

After exploring the entire site, leave the park by taking the driveway. After 700 metres / 1.2 km, you will reach the road that takes you uphill from Vernazzano Basso: turn right and continue on the gravel road to the last house. From there, the route continues to the left, entering an olive grove and crossing the hill in a south-westerly direction.

After returning to the valley at a place called Cerqueto, turn right and follow the fence of a farmhouse. After a short stretch in the woods, you will reach Via del Pozzo. Turn left onto this road and, subsequently, onto Via Giovanni Pascoli. A few hundred metres after, you will arrive at the historic centre of Tuoro sul Trasimeno.

Once you have left the historic centre, head northeast on Via del Pozzo. Keep on going until the intersection with Via Cupa. Follow this road and, at the junction with Via del Porto, turn left. After a series of crossroads, enter Via Casa Piano. After 500 metres, continue straight on Via Fonte Sant’Angelo, where you will return to the starting point of the itinerary.
