Historical Reenactments, Performances, Food & Music
Tuoro 217 BC is a historical reenactment dedicated to the Battle of Trasimene and to the events, customs, and traditions of the Roman Republic during the time of the Punic Wars.
It was established in 2019 as the natural evolution of the Palio Rionale (1983) and the popular traditions of Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
The event is distinguished by the presence of Roman, Celtic, and Etruscan camps and reenactment groups, as well as gladiatorial shows and period music. Throughout the village, visitors will find areas dedicated to ancient games, taverns, and traditional Roman arts and crafts.
Activities and Collaborations
Since the 1990s, the historic center of Tuoro has, once a year, been filled with the aromas of ancient cuisine!
The Historical Dinner offers historically documented dishes from the Romans, Carthaginians, and Etruscans, accompanied by themed music.
The tradition of Hannibal and the Punic War is deeply felt in Tuoro, to the point that the town’s population, divided into four districts (Colonna, Malpasso, Trasimena, and Valromana), challenges each other through theatrical performances!
Since the early 2000s, the amphitheatre in Parco Il Sodo has hosted plays depicting various moments from Hannibal’s war, staged by small theatre companies from each district. A specialized jury then selects the winner.
Since 1983, on August 14 each year, the four districts of Tuoro (Colonna, Malpasso, Trasimena, Valromana) compete for the Amphora of Victory in the so-called Tiro della Biga (“Chariot Push”).
It is a test of strength and speed: each district forms a team of seven “pullers” who must push their Roman-style chariot as fast as possible along the town’s main street, finishing in the Piazza del Municipio.
The event recalls the legend according to which the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca lost his golden chariot, which sank into Lake Trasimene during the bloody battle of the same name.
