Route of the Battle of Trasimeno (main itinerary)
The itinerary crosses the Tuoro sul Trasimeno valley touching all the locations of the battle.
It starts at the square in front of the museum Hannibal at Trasimeno. The museum, which can be visited before or after the tour, is entirely dedicated to the battle and its various stages, offering insights into the scientific debate, historical sources, the events that led to the clash and the eventual outcomes of the Second Punic War.
Leave the village crossing Piazza del Municipio and continue north along Via Sant’Antonio. Then take Via Baroncino which will soon lead you to a small parking lot: From there, climb the steps and enter the first site dedicated to the Battle of Trasimeno. Continue on the same street until the intersection at vocabolo “Torraccia” where a restored tower stands on the left.
At Torraccia turn left towards Sanguineto. After a few hundred metres you will find the second site. Proceed further uphill to reach the small hamlet of Sanguineto.
From Sanguineto follow the main road that opens up into a long, straight descent which offers a beautiful panoramic view over the whole valley. Along the way, there are three rest areas. From the last one, continue straight on the main road to reach the intersection with the State Road.
After crossing the road and visiting the nearby site, proceed on the main road heading east for almost 200 meters: then turn right towards Pieve Confini. After a short stretch of asphalt, the path becomes a gravel road that then bends sharply to the left.
After Following a series of hairpin bends and passing an underpass, you will reach another intersection. A right turn will bring you to a second underpass, cross it and go up through the olive trees until the next parking area. This section of the route bypasses the ancient Pieve Confini, a majestic religious structure clearly visible on the right.
The itinerary resumes its ascent, among the olive trees. After a few hundred metres, you will briefly enter the State Road before immediately turning back by turning left, onto the parallel gravel road, reaching the intersection with Via Puntabella shortly after.
From the intersection, turning right, take the asphalt road for a round trip, reaching “Puntabella”: a panoramic terrace housing another important panel dedicated to the battle. Descending once again on the same road you will reach a railroad crossing. After crossing it, turn left in the direction of Borghetto. Soon after you will arrive at an underpass, after which, turning left, you will enter the cycle path of Lake Trasimeno.
The route now continues for 3 miles / 5 km on the cycle path. Along the way, a stop is highly recommended at the “Malpasso”, one of the most evocative and crucial sites of the whole tour. Here a walkway allows access to the lake, offering a privileged view. In addition, 1.5 miles / 2.4 km from Malpasso, you will reach access to Punta Macerone, the principal place of natural interest in all of the municipal area.
Continuing along the cycle path you will arrive at the Punta Navaccia area, which houses the sculpture park of Campo del Sole. This is certainly worth visiting, before resuming the route and continuing to follow the cycle path.
Leave the cycle path by turning left after approximately 300 metres. The gravel path diverging from the track leads to the panel in front of the Casa del Piano, an imposing historic building that runs along Via George Byron. Cross the latter and, after a short distance, turn right onto the road that leads to Via Giovanni Falcone. From here, through a series of intersections, you cross Via Console Flaminio and pass through the lower part of the village of Tuoro until you reach Via Annibale Cartaginese.
From the intersection with Via Annibale Cartaginese, a brief round trip will bring you to the Roman Column. When you arrive at the intersection, continue on Via Fornello, the road that leads to the famous ustrina. Departing from here, follow Via Palazzo, an asphalt road that will soon lead you back, a few steps away from the historic centre of the town.
