Description

Tuoro’s central square, Piazza del Municipio, is the heart of the historical centre. The central area is adorned by a fountain, built in 1888, at the same time as the construction of the municipal aqueduct. Its original function was to supply water to the town at the time.

At first, the fountain was built in travertine marble; later, the rim of the octagonal basin was changed and local sandstone, known as pietra serena, was used. The wrought iron railing, which surmounted the edge of the basin, also underwent major changes. It was in fact dismantled during the Second World War, when the Toreggiani (inhabitants of Tuoro) had to give up all the iron they could for the construction of weapons to be used during the fighting, and was never put back in place.
