Museum Itinerary

Groups welcome

The itinerary allows visitors to see all of the museums and exhibition spaces on Isola Maggiore.

Description

It starts from the area in front of the building that houses the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum). The museum displays the best ‘pizzo d’Irlanda’ creations made by the island’s women. This art has become a calling card for the area. The artefacts were made at the local embroidery school established in the early years of the last century by Elena Guglielmi (the daughter of Marquis Giacinto Guglielmi).

Once you’ve visited the museum, proceed north on Via Guglielmi and you will reach the chiesa del Buon Gesù. Nearby there is a small building called ‘Casa del Capitano del Popolo’, which houses the Documentation Centre of Isola Maggiore. The building houses important works of art from the island’s churches. In addition, an interior tour with signage and graphic reconstructions provides an understanding of the religious, economic and traditional aspects of the area.

The itinerary then continues on Via Guglielmi in the direction of the chiesa di San Salvatore. From here, pass the church and turn right. Climb up to the pieve di San Michele Arcangelo. The building has invaluable frescoes, with works ranging from the late 13th century to the early 16th century. It is the most important artistic monument on the entire island, as well as one of the most important in all of Trasimeno.

After visiting the pieve, head back toward the village via the wide trail that descends to the entrance of Villa Guglielmi (former Franciscan complex, currently not accessible). The basalt road of Via Tre Martiri leads back to Via Guglielmi. From here, passed the medieval palace and the Oratorio della Buona Morte, you will return to the starting point of the itinerary.
