MUSEUM AND LANDING ROUTE

Pets allowed

Groups welcome

The itinerary partly follows the Museum Itinerary. In addition to allowing the visit of all the museums and exhibition spaces of Isola Maggiore, it also crosses the places commemorating the presence of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Description

It starts from the area in front of the building that houses the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum). The museum displays the best ‘pizzo d’Irlanda’ creations made by the island’s women. This art has become a calling card for the area. The artefacts were made at the local embroidery school established in the early years of the last century by Elena Guglielmi (the daughter of Marquis Giacinto Guglielmi).

Once you’ve visited the museum, proceed north on Via Guglielmi and you will reach the chiesa del Buon Gesù. Nearby there is a small building called ‘Casa del Capitano del Popolo’, which houses the Documentation Centre of Isola Maggiore. The building houses important works of art from the island’s churches. In addition, an interior tour with signage and graphic reconstructions provides an understanding of the religious, economic and traditional aspects of the area.

The itinerary then continues on Via Guglielmi in the direction of the chiesa di San Salvatore. From here, pass the church and turn right. Climb up to the pieve di San Michele Arcangelo. The building has invaluable frescoes, with works ranging from the late 13th century to the early 16th century. It is the most important artistic monument on the entire island, as well as one of the most important in all of Trasimeno.

After visiting the pieve instead of heading back toward the village, proceed in a northerly direction until you see the trail (with steps in some sections) that descends to the eastern shore of the lake. You will proceed through the woods, passing the first Franciscan site (the small chapel protecting the rock considered to be the saint’s bed). A short time later you will reach the exact spot where, according to tradition, St. Francis is said to have landed in the early 13th century.

To return to the starting point of the itinerary, simply follow the trail along the shore. It is surrounded by nature, and offers fantastic views of the lake and the Trasimeno hills
