Description

Campo del sole is an imposing architectural ensemble, an open-air museum, and a unique sculpture park located at Punta Navaccia, a project conceived by renowned artist Pietro Cascella with the collaboration of sculptors like Mauro Berrettini and Cordelia von den Steinen.

It is a kind of “memorial” that does not refer to any particular event, but sums up in itself the memory of the very special historical significance of these places, to expand immediately to an occasion of encounter and dialogue, near and at the same time far, everyday and, at the same time, historical, in the most general sense possible.

The project was carried out at different times from the summer of 1985 to the fall of 1989 and has the figure of a large spiral formed by 27 column-sculptures that lead to a central table (made by Pietro Cascella) surmounted by a solar symbol, an ideal and real reference to the meeting and the familiarity.

This table constitutes the finish line of a meditative path: at first briefly linear, then coiled in the two turns of the spiral. Authors of the columns, all made in the local grey sandstone known as pietra serena, are Italian and non-Italian sculptors of different generations and different stylistic approach. Each column-sculpture measures about 4.5 meters in height with a diameter ranging from 70 to 80 cm.

The column theme grants the whole its rhythm of diffuse verticality, which makes Campo del Sole something like a Stonehenge of our time. A monument, Campo del Sole, not dedicated to some thing or to someone, but an effective monument on the possibility of dialogue; an encounter between diversities, a place of even daily frequentation, without walls or barriers; even a landmark of landscape of remote and multiple Mediterranean resonances, in its reference to the solar symbol.
